Scholarly publishing is an expected output of academic research, but it’s not the part of science that most researchers signed up for. When it comes time to prepare a manuscript, you must not only tell the story of your research, often in your non-native language, but also navigate a whole new world of deadlines, acronyms, and jargon. If that’s not enough, there are some serious pitfalls on the path to publication: ignore them at your peril. This interactive class will give you an introduction to scholarly publishing and teach you what to expect, what to avoid, and above all, how to successfully publish your research in a reputable peer-reviewed scholarly journal.

Intended Audience
If you’ve written 0-2 research papers for publication in a journal, but know that scholarly publishing is going to be part of your future, this workshop is for you. No advance registration is required. However, seating is limited and will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Students and those in their early careers may find this course especially valuable.

Gwen Weerts is the SPIE Journals Manager and Editor in Chief of Photonics Focus, SPIE's award-winning bimonthly magazine. She has worked in scholarly publishing and science communication for sixteen years. Gwen is a member of the Society for Scholarly Publishing and the National Association of Science Writers.

Matt Jungwirth has been a Member of SPIE since 2009 and was appointed Fellow in 2024. He recently joined SPIE staff as the Manager, Technical Content and Scientific Publishing, where he combines his expertise as an optical engineer and journal associate editor. Matt has a Ph.D. in optical engineering from University of Arizona.
