Lightning Talk: Too Few Women Authors
26 January 2025 • 2:30 PM - 2:40 PM PST | Marriott Marquis Hotel, Golden Gate A (Lower Level)
How much bias exists in the peer-review process is difficult to study and has long been the subject of debate. Studies have shown that people rate men’s competence more highly than women’s when assessing identical job applications; that there is a gender bias against women in citations; and that women are given less credit for their work than are men. In 2024 Nature reported the gender balance of authors of 5,000 papers submitted to the journal over five months: only 17% of corresponding authors identify as women, and women’s papers are less likely to be accepted than men’s. So what can journals like Nature do to ensure that more women find a home for their research?
