My greatest inspiration was my grandmother's story: Because she was "only a girl" she could not go to college. She trained as a pilot in 1940 through the Civil Air Patrol, because she "was a girl." She and my grandfather owned and ran a machine shop - she ran the machines and the business, he made the tools. In my family, there is a great appreciation for building things, and I would say the die was cast when my
grandparents first built that machine shop. It was only a question of what kind of engineer - and what do I want to build, next?
Taking a page from my grandmother's book, I decided to form my own company, Logical Marketing. We provide support to photonics and technology companies; we apply engineering principles to the sales and marketing functions: we analyze the past, survey the market environment, assess the company's strengths and capabilities, and develop a plan to get them to where they want to be. We measure what is working, and what is not, so that mid-course corrections can be made. I see it as Engineering on a Grand Scale - intellectually challenging, imaginatively stimulating, and economically important.
Remember: "Don't Keep Score". The older I get, the more I regret the energy I wasted getting upset at "losses". Picture a sculler rowing on the water - if the sculler gets upset, and throws a fit for every bad stroke, the sculler is going to go nowhere and may actually flip. If the sculler just keeps taking stroke after stroke, the good with the bad, she will get to the end of the course, happy and upright.
