BIOS Hot Topics: Intelligent Image-Activated Cell Sorting

Current cell-sorting techniques require fluorescent tags to be added to key proteins that distinguish cell types. Cells are sorted by automated instruments that detect the presence of fluorescence. Keisuke Goda, a professor of chemistry at University of Tokyo, and his colleagues have developed a new machine-intelligence technology called "intelligent image-activated cell sorting" that uses imaging to refine the fluorescent-sorting process. Goda's team has demonstrated the ability to make machine-based scientific discoveries in biological, pharmaceutical, and medical sciences.
