Google AR Director Bernard Kress has been involved in the field of optics — and specifically micro-optics — for the past two decades, as an associate professor, instructor, author, entrepreneur, engineer, team manager, and engineering director. He has been instrumental in developing new optical technologies that have been included in various industrial, defense, and consumer products, impacting fields such as laser materials processing, optical anti-counterfeiting, biotech sensors, optical telecom devices, optical data storage, optical computing, motion sensors, displays, depth map sensors, and head-mounted displays. He has published numerous books and book chapters on micro-optics, and has had more than 50 patents granted worldwide. Previous roles include principal optical architect on the Google Glass project, and partner optical architect on the Hololens team at Microsoft.

One example of Kress’ expertise is the success of his SPIE courses on micro-optics and portable immersive displays. These courses have had a profound impact, contributing to the professional development of students and employees, while generating greater interest in continuing optics education. His efforts have enhanced SPIE’s course lineup, making it a highly regarded resource for the optics community. Beyond education, publishing, research and conference activities, Kress has been a key advocate for the optics and photonics business ecosystem. His efforts to promote networking, support startups, and launch initiatives have invigorated the community. An SPIE Fellow since 2013, Kress’ service to SPIE governance has been exemplary, with roles ranging from committee member and conference chair, his participation on the SPIE Board of Directors, and his role as SPIE President in 2023.

“Bernard Kress has rendered a unique and meritorious service of outstanding benefit to optics and photonics and to the growth and reputation of SPIE,” says 2025 SPIE President Peter de Groot. “His leadership in creating and expanding the Digital Optics and AR|VR|MR conferences has been transformative, bringing together experts and advancing the field immeasurably. In addition, his innovative approach to virtual and online conference activities, especially during the Covid health crisis, ensured the continued growth of these crucial events. Kress’ popular short courses and ongoing ‘Fireside Chats’ have driven progress in XR and micro-optics technologies, research, and entrepreneurship. Perhaps most importantly, Bernard’s personal qualities as a friendly, open, energetic, insightful, and constructive contributor are highly appreciated by his SPIE colleagues, as well as by the wider optics community.”
