Approximation of wave optics calculation of scintillation in horizontal and slant path free space optical links

Abstract

Recent work has shown that calculations of scintillation using wave optic simulation provides a much closer match to experiment than analytic approaches, such as extended Rytov theory. However, link budgets using analytic theories can be calculated much faster than those using wave optic simulation. Although there has been progress in speeding up these calculations using graphics processing units, it would still be convenient to have a low complexity solution for quick calculations with limited computing resources. In this work we pre-calculate wave optic simulations for uniform horizontal links using dimensionless parameters that allow application to a wide variety of cases. We then develop approximations to the pre-calculated values that allow quick computation. We then extend those approximations to links with non-uniform conditions.
