Workshop description
Many students don't consider their exit plan when they enter graduate school. Often by the time they realize they're interested in a career in industry, they may be about to graduate and feel unprepared for an environment outside of academia. Dr. Benjamin Cromey will discuss how he prepared for his career in industry throughout his PhD, and discuss practical advice on how any student can do the same. He will discuss networking, the value of your time and learning ability, and how he prepared to be an optical engineer. Please come ready to ask questions about careers in industry and have a good discussion on how to prepare for it now.

Intended audience
Students and those in their early careers may find this course especially valuable and are encouraged to attend. This workshop is open to all with a technical attendee badge. No advance registration is required. However, seating is limited and will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Dr. Benjamin Cromey is a Principal Optical Engineer at BAE Systems Space and Mission Systems (formerly Ball Aerospace). He received his PhD in Optical Sciences from the University of Arizona in 2020. His work includes key roles on NASA missions such as the Roman Space Telescope Wide Field Instrument, the Ocean Color Instrument (OCX), and R&D efforts to prepare for the Habitable Worlds Observatory. Dr. Cromey has been teaching engineers for almost ten years, and has more than ten years of volunteering history across Optica, SPIE, and the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation.
