Integrated photonics is a revolutionary technology that enables complex optical functionality within a small footprint and permits parallelized detection schemes. While silicon photonics has matured as a new technology, it is not ideally suited for life science applications due to its non-transparency to visible light. Imec has now developed a silicon-nitride-based photonics platform that is ideally suited for visible-light bio applications such as molecular sensing, cytometry, and spectroscopy.
