Paul McManamon, Lawrence Klein, Glenn Boreman headline SPIE Press event on lidar, sensing

BELLINGHAM, Washington, USA — On 6 April, SPIE Press will host an interactive digital event with three top lidar, sensing, and optical characterization of imaging systems authors. During the 90-minute session moderated by Michigan Tech Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Jeremy Bos, authors Paul McManamon, Lawrence Klein, and Glenn Boreman will discuss their recent books and take questions from the audience. Registration for the event — which will take place in the lead-up to the 2021 SPIE Defense + Commercial Sensing Digital Forum — is free and open to the public. In addition, all attendees will be offered a 20% discount on any of the books that SPIE Press has published by these authors.

Paul McManamon started the research company Exciting Technology following his retirement as chief scientist for the Air Force Research Lab Sensors Directorate. He is also the technical director of the Lidar and Optical Communications Institute at the University of Dayton. His 2019 book, LiDAR Technologies and Systems, covers various aspects of lidar technology, from its history and rich phenomenology to the components of a lidar system - including laser sources and modulators, lidar receivers, beam-steering approaches, and lidar processing - as well as significant related applications.

Lawrence Klein consults in sensor and data fusion applications for aerospace and traffic management; millimeter-wave radar system development for commercial, military, and homeland defense; and conceptual design of efficient multimodal ground-transportation systems. His 2019 book, Sensor and Data Fusion for Intelligent Transport Systems, discusses data-fusion processes defined by the Joint Directors of Laboratories (JDL) data fusion model and the Data Fusion Information Group (DFIG) enhancements; data-fusion algorithms; and noteworthy applications of data fusion to intelligent transportation systems.

Glenn Boreman is the chairman of the Department of Physics and Optical Science and the director of the Center for Optoelectronics and Optical Communications at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. His 2021 book, Modulation Transfer Function in Optical and Electro-Optical Systems, Second Edition, introduces the theory and applications of the modulation transfer function (MTF) used to specify the image quality achieved by an imaging system. The updated edition includes new chapters on speckle-based and transparency-based noise targets, and square-wave and bar-target measurements.

"This is a terrific opportunity to hear from and interact with three experts in sensing," noted Bos, whose presentation at SPIE Defense + Commercial Sensing this year will address the effect of severe winter weather on lidar performance in the context of autonomous vehicles. "Paul McManamon, Lawrence Klein, and Glenn Boreman have all made key contributions to the field, and their books provide exceptional perspectives and insights. I'm excited to hear what each of them has to say, and I look forward to what will surely be a dynamic interaction between them and the attendees."

The event will be recorded, and the recording will be available for those who register.

SPIE Press is a publishing arm of SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics.

About SPIE

SPIE is the international society for optics and photonics, an educational not-for-profit organization founded in 1955 to advance light-based science, engineering, and technology. The Society serves more than 258,000 constituents from 184 countries, offering conferences and their published proceedings, continuing education, books, journals, and the SPIE Digital Library. In 2020, SPIE provided over $5 million in community support including scholarships and awards, outreach and advocacy programs, travel grants, public policy, and educational resources. www.spie.org.
